Thanksgiving is coming! And with that we all have something to be thankful for. For me it’s family, friends, and eating a lot of turkey on the 22nd. However, I am especially thankful for all the things Alpha Kappa Psi has been able to provide me.
When I rushed Alpha Kappa Psi, I was a junior with zero professional experience. My resume was subpar, along with my interviewing skills. I knew I needed an internship, but I had no idea on how to receive one. After coming to my senses, I looked at every organization JSOM had to offer. This is when Alpha Kappa Psi stuck out to me. It promised to help turn me into a principled business leader. Intrigued, I decided to attend the first rush event. I immediately clicked with the brothers and knew that this was something I wanted to be a part of.
After rush, came the pledge process where I learned everything, from how to write a professional email to how to dress properly for an interview. The pledge process was difficult, but extremely valuable. In fact, I became very close friends with my pledge brothers. These are the motivating people I would have never met without the help of Alpha Kappa Psi. During this time, my public speaking and presentation skills improved, and my confidence grew. By the end of the process I had already had interviews scheduled for different internships around the metroplex.
Finally, when I became a brother, I ran for an executive position. This allowed me to emerge as a leader within the fraternity. Being able to make decisions that benefited our chapter was very important to me. I was also able to take on 2 mentees. This allowed me to pass on my experience, knowledge and skills to people who were in my shoes almost a year ago.
I am thankful for Alpha Kappa Psi because of all the people it brought me too. I am thankful for the brothers at the rush events who were so open and friendly when answering the many questions, I had. I am thankful for my pledge educator, Vihan for showing me the basics of being a professional and my mentor, Hayden, for expanding on Vihan’s teachings. Without them I would have never had the confidence or skills to apply to internships. I am thankful for the internships I have received, which I would not have been able to obtain without Alpha Kappa Psi. Finally, I am thankful for the lifelong friends I have made in Alpha Kappa Psi. These people are my closest friends I have made in my time at UTD and I can rely on them for almost anything.
Without Alpha Kappa Psi my life would be very different. I am thankful for the impact that it has made on my life and hope it can make an impact on yours.
